Red Sox Backup Catcher Has Surgery After Carlos Narvaez News
Both Red Sox catchers had surgery this week
Both of the Boston Red Sox’s catchers have gone under the knife to start the offseason.
The Red Sox announced on Thursday that backup catcher Connor Wong underwent hand surgery, just one day after starter Carlos Narvaez had a knee procedure.
“Connor Wong had surgery today, the Red Sox announced: right hand carpal boss excision. A carpal boss is a bony lump/outgrowth on the back of the hand,” Tim Healey of The Boston Globe posted on Bluesky. “And Carlos Narvaez had his right knee meniscus surgery yesterday.”
Wong just finished his fifth year with Boston, but after serving as the starting backstop in 2023 and 2024, he lost the gig to Narvaez this season.
The 29-year-old had a solid 2024 campaign, recording 13 home runs, 52 RBIs and a .280/.333/.425 slash line across 126 games (487 plate appearances).
Wong suffered a left pinky finger fracture in April this season, however, and spent nearly one month on the injured list.
He finished the year with no home runs, seven RBIs and a .190/.262/.238 slash line over 188 plate appearances covering 63 contests.
