Will Story return this offseason?
Entering this season, few Boston Red Sox fans would’ve signed on for three more years of Trevor Story. But things have changed since last spring, and Story now is among the more fascinating Red Sox storylines to follow this offseason.
Story has two years and $55 million remaining on the six-year, $140 million contract he signed in 2022. However, he can opt out of the deal and test free agency this winter, an outcome more possible now than it was a year ago following Story’s resurgent 2025 campaign.
If Story elects to opt out, the Red Sox could void the decision by adding an extra year (2028) to the deal for $20 million, effectively extending the 32-year-old for three years at $75 million.
The veteran shortstop addressed his uncertain Red Sox future following Thursday night’s crushing playoff exit in New York.
“It’s not at the top of mind,” Story told reporters after a 4-0 Game 3 loss to the Yankees, via MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “I’m not gonna speak on that right now. But I came here to be here for a long time.”
It’s hard to guess how the Red Sox would feel about keeping Story around.
On the one hand, Boston has two potential franchise middle infielders — shortstop Marcelo Mayer and second baseman Kristian Campbell — waiting in the wings. On the other hand, Story, who can play both positions and hit .263 with 25 homers and 31 stolen bases in 157 games this season, is a far more proven commodity than both players despite his recent injury issues.
Boston might want to have Story in case Mayer and/or Campbell don’t pan out. But if both youngsters seize control of their respective jobs next spring, the Red Sox would be in a difficult spot with Story, who would be too expensive and talented to keep on the bench.
So, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with Story — and with fellow opt-out candidate Alex Bregman, for that matter.
