Marco Sturm Calls Bruins Upset Win Over Maple Leafs ‘Very Impressive’

'It was great to see'

Boston Bruins head coach Marco Sturm was pleased with his team’s effort in their 5-3 road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.

The Bruins entered the game shorthanded as star defenseman Charlie McAvoy was out of the lineup due to personal matters, while top-six forward Casey Mittelstadt was out due to an injury.

Despite being without two impact players, Boston played well from start to finish en route to a 5-3 win, which impressed Sturm.

“It feels good coming to Toronto, it is always not easy, especially when you are missing a few guys too,” Sturm said, as seen on NESN’s postgame coverage. “But we kind of stuck with our game and just like I told the guys, for me it was a very impressive win. The way we played five-on-five, the way we finished the game, it was great to see.”

The Maple Leafs scored the first goal of the game, but Boston answered just 28 seconds later. The Bruins took a 2-1 lead just 20 seconds after that.

Although Toronto did tie it up before the end of the first period, Sturm said he didn’t have too much to say in the intermission, as the focus was on not taking any more penalties.

“We just touched on a few things, we were good five-on-five, just didn’t want to give them any momentum on the power play. That is unfortnately what we did, just going back to taking unnecessary penalties. But the five-on-five game was not bad; we just had to be a little bit smarter.”

Despite being without McAvoy and Mittelstadt, the Bruins were able to get a big road win to improve to 10-7-0.

Boston will return to the ice on Tuesday at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
