'I loved his game'
Boston Bruins head coach Marco Sturm had high praise for Fraser Minten after Saturday’s 5-3 road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Bruins entered the game with Charlie McAvoy and Casey Mittelstadt out of the lineup. Yet, it was rookie forward Fraser Minten who stepped up against his former team.
Minten scored late in the third period to give the Bruins a 5-3 lead, which seemingly ended the game. He was also stellar defensively, and Sturm thought he was the best player on the ice.
“I thought he was the best player on the ice. He was just very, very calm,” Sturm said, as seen on NESN’s postgame coverage on Saturday. “The little details he had, he was ready to go.
“He wanted to be out there. To me, that’s impressive. Because a lot of the young kids, they don’t, especially in tight games. And he got traded from that team. I loved his game today.”
Minten, meanwhile, was appreciative of Sturm’s praise and is hopeful he can build off that.
“It’s great,” Minten said. “That’s my goal as a player. I’m a competitive guy. I want to be out there playing. Continuing to build on that, earn that trust, earn those minutes. That’s why I play the game.”
The 21-year-old also had a great game against his former team, as the Maple Leafs traded Minten to Boston at last year’s trade deadline in the Brandon Carlo deal. So, to score and help the Bruins win against his old team was special for Minten.
“About as good as it can,” Minten said about his emotions on scoring against his old team. “Very good. That’s a huge win for us. Toronto is a good team, and they’ve been playing good lately.”
The Bruins will host the Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
