MLB Insider Expects Red Sox To Be ‘A Big Player’ For All-Star Slugger

Will Boston make a run at Kyle Schwarber?

The Boston Red Sox have been clear about their goals this offseason, which include landing a top starting pitcher and a middle-of-the-order slugger.

The latter could lead them to a reunion with Kyle Schwarber, who spent part of the 2021 season with them before joining the Philadelphia Phillies.

Now 32, Schwarber is coming off the best year of his career after leading the National League in home runs (56) and the Major Leagues in RBI (132). With his elite power and on-base skills, he would be an ideal replacement for Rafael Devers, whom the Red Sox traded to the San Francisco Giants in June.

Given Schwarber’s track record and previous success in Boston, the Red Sox are expected to be “a big player” for him and “absolutely a team to watch for him” this offseason, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray.

Murray, who’s at the GM meetings in Las Vegas this week, says the people he’s talked to believe Boston will pursue Schwarber this offseason.

That’s not too surprising, as the three-time All-Star is a great fit for the Red Sox. They need pop after struggling to hit home runs without Devers last year, and Schwarber is one of the most prolific power hitters in baseball. He’s also a great teammate and respected veteran leader with extensive playoff experience.

Boston has money to spend and will likely make a serious push for Schwarber, who’s arguably the best hitter on the market this winter along with Pete Alonso. After losing out on him four years ago, the Red Sox are well-positioned to try to get him back.
