Winckowski and Lowe were released
With the Rule-5 Draft approaching, the Boston Red Sox are clearing spots on their 40-man roster.
On Tuesday, they designated Nathaniel Lowe to clear a spot for infielder Tristan Gray, who was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Luis Guerrero. The team is also reportedly designating Josh Winckowski for assignment, according to Chris Cotillo.
Lowe was in the final year of arbitration and was set to make a sizeable amount in 2026. MLB Trade Rumors projected his arbitration salary to be $13.5 million, which is a hefty price tag for a first baseman who’s struggled over the past two seasons.
Lowe provided a spark for the Red Sox in August when he signed for the team after being released by the Washington Nationals. He hit .280 and drove in 16 runs over the final two months of the season. The former Gold Glove first baseman will draw interest from clubs in free agency.
Winckowski was excellent for the Red Sox in 2023, but wasn’t able to replicate that success in 2024 or 2025. He pitched in six games for Boston in 2025, registering a 3.86 ERA over 11 2/3 innings. He worked in low-leverage spots as he failed to punch out hitters at a high rate and handed out a few too many free passes. He was optioned to Triple-A Worcester in late April and later went on the injured list with elbow inflammation, ending his season.
With excellent pitching depth in the system, Boston released Winckowski to gain a spot on the 40-man roster to use on a younger, higher-ceiling pitcher.
Pitchers David Sandlin and Tyler Uberstine are among those who are in consideration to be protected.
