Not even a replay could confirm to Zary that the goal was his
Connor Zary is credited with the game-winning goal for the Flames in the Boston Bruins’ loss to Calgary on Monday night, but even he admits he’s unsure if he was the one to knock it in.
The Flames were on the power play with just over three minutes to go in overtime following a Jonathan Aspirot high-sticking penalty. Yegor Sharangovich sent a wrist shot from the top of the left circle to the net, which led to a loose-puck scramble. Sticks from both teams waved around, and Zary’s, apparently, was the one to connect and sneak it past Jeremy Swayman for the 2-1 win.
Zary had been manning the top of the crease, but it’s possible a Bruins stick knocked the puck in, which theoretically could mean it’s Sharangovich’s goal.
It’s ultimately a clerical matter more than anything, but even after watching the replay postgame, Zary told reporters they don’t know who actually should’ve gotten the credit.
“We’ve watched it a few times, I don’t know (how it went in),” Zary said, via NHL.com. “Might have to play rock, paper, scissors (for who gets credit). It doesn’t really matter. We were just excited to get the win. We all looked at each other like, ‘Who touched that? Who scored that?’ It was pretty funny.”
The Bruins led 1-0 in the game off an Andrew Peeke first-period goal, but Calgary pulled level in the second with a Blake Coleman wrister that beat Swayman.
The Bruins return to action Wednesday in Edmonton against the Oilers.
