Diggs is not owed any guaranteed money after this season
The Dallas Cowboys announced a surprise roster move Tuesday afternoon. Trevon Diggs, brother of New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs, has been released from the Cowboys with just one game left in the season.
“The Cowboys have released cornerback Trevon Diggs,” ESPN’s Todd Archer reported. “He goes through the waiver process and if unclaimed, he will be a free agent.”
The 27-year-old cornerback is just a few years removed from a first-team All-Pro selection after a 2021 season in which he tied the franchise record for single-season interceptions with 11.
Diggs is in Year 2 of a five-year, $97 million deal, but there is a built-in out after 2025. This means that any team looking to make a playoff push could rent the playmaking cornerback at a very low cost.
ESPN’s Field Yates broke down what it would cost to acquire Diggs for the end of the year.
“If a team were to claim Trevon Diggs off of waivers, it would be on the hook for the $472K he is due in base salary for Week 18, plus $58,823 if he is active this week,” Yates said. “Diggs has no guaranteed money on his deal beyond this season.”
The Patriots have managed to build a 13-3 roster despite spending the least amount of money in the league.
New England’s $53.5 million in cap space is more than any other team. The Washington Commanders have the second-most available cap space at $37.4 million.
Considering Diggs’ family ties in Foxboro and the amount of money the Patriots have left to spend, there is room for a conversation to be had about acquiring the two-time Pro Bowler.
