'Just wanting them to do their job at a high level'
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye earned his first fourth-quarter comeback victory Sunday night against the Baltimore Ravens.
The second-year quarterback received no favors from the officiating crew, however.
A controversial no-call on an obvious pass interference was nearly the talk of the week, had it not been for the offense’s fourth-and-two conversion on the way to finding the endzone with 2:07 to play.
When asked about the no-call, Maye told the “WEEI Afternoons” crew that he is a few years away from getting that call.
“Early on, at my young stages of my career, I’m trying to get to know the refs; try to get to know them well, and hopefully create a good relationship with them and be nice,” Maye said. “But I think there comes a time down the road I can see myself kind of switching the switch and flipping the page to a little darker side with some refs.”
From the outside looking in, the 23-year-old quarterback did not react to the obscene missed call. He shrugged off the long replay review and completed the very next pass to Austin Hooper for a gain of eight yards.
“It hasn’t shown up yet; it was pretty close last night,” Maye said. “I just try to move on to the next play becaise there’s nothing we can do about it after it happens, just try to move on but I definitely think down the road I can be — not more of getting hostile with the refs — but just wanting them to do their job at a high level just like we’re trying to do.”
