Ex-Patriots QB Pushes To Replace Patrick Mahomes Through Season’s End

'Phone line’s open'

The Kansas City Chiefs are grappling with several quarterback injuries as the season comes to a close. Patrick Mahomes is sidelined with a torn ACL, and backup Gardner Minshew also suffered an injury during the loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Amid all the quarterback injuries, former Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel took to X on Sunday night to share his thoughts on wanting to return to play for the Chiefs.

“Seeing a lot of people mentioning me going to the Chiefs. Arm’s loose. Phone line’s open,” Cassel wrote.

Cassel played for the Chiefs from 2009 to 2012, finishing with a 19-28 record. He began his NFL career with the New England Patriots, where he gained recognition during the 2008 season. That year, he started 15 games while Tom Brady was sidelined for nearly the entire season due to a torn ACL.

Cassel hasn’t played in the NFL since 2018, and at 43, there’s a strong likelihood he won’t be making a comeback. However, the Colts recently signed 44-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers, which could open the door for Cassel’s return.

The Chiefs will face the Broncos on Christmas Night, a game that could hold significant implications for Patriots fans. If Denver comes up short, it could bring New England one step closer to securing the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
