This is a splendid development for Boston, if accurate.
MLB Winter Meetings have commenced, and there’s new Pete Alonso buzz that Boston Red Sox fans will smile about.
“The team that is best-positioned to sign Pete Alonso, not named the Mets, is the Boston Red Sox,” MLB Network’s Jon Morosi asserted on Sunday night while standing at the scene of the Winter Meetings.
“I’ve just got visions of how many home runs Pete Alonso might hit playing at Fenway Park,” Morosi continued.
Morosi said that there’s a 40 percent chance that the first baseman returns to the Mets.
Whichever team does land the Polar Bear will be getting a guy that’s proven he’s durable. Alonso has appeared in all 162 games for the Mets over the past two seasons, consistency which, combined with his powerful bat, has allowed Alonso to accumulate mighty-impressive numbers over the last half-decade or more.
Since the start of 2019, Alonso ranks first in MLB in games played (1,008), first in RBI (712), third in home runs (264), and third in total bases (1,942).
The Red Sox have already made a couple of notable moves this offseason. They traded for starting pitcher Sonny Gray and soon after traded for another starter, Johan Oviedo.
Now, it’s widely presumed that Boston is focusing on bolstering its lineup, with Alonso, Kyle Schwarber, and Alex Bregman factoring into the equation as the club’s alleged top targets.
