An AFC East rival released him Wednesday
The New England Patriots have the opportunity to reunite with a former defensive standout.
Matthew Judon is officially a free agent after clearing waivers on Thursday, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. The Miami Dolphins released the pass rusher on Wednesday.
Judon made two of four straight Pro Bowl appearances with the Patriots, registering 12.5 sacks in 2021 and a career-high 15.5 sacks in 2022. The former fifth-round pick collected 133 tackles, 62 quarterback hits, 32 sacks and two forced fumbles in 38 games for New England.
After missing most of the 2023 season with a torn biceps, Judon returned to tally 5.5 sacks and his only career interception (returned for a 27-yard touchdown) for the Atlanta Falcons. He rejoined the AFC East when he signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins in August.
Judon didn’t make his mark in Miami, going 13 games without a sack while notching just three quarterback hits. The 33-year-old played 23 snaps in Monday’s 28-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
His release creates an intriguing opportunity for New England to bolster its defense down the stretch. The Patriots have 29 sacks this season and passed on acquiring any pass-rushing depth before the trade deadline.
Joining the Patriots would also give Judon a chance for revenge against the Dolphins in Week 18 before embarking on a potential postseason push. New England can clinch a playoff spot with a win over Judon’s first team, the Baltimore Ravens, on Sunday night.
