Insider Drops Red Sox-Bo Bichette Update As Fans Await Move

The Red Sox continue to show interest in Bichette

The winter meetings came and went, but the Boston Red Sox did not sign an impact bat off the open market. Craig Breslow has made it clear that Boston wants to add power to the lineup, but some of the top options this winter are no longer available.

Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber both signed new deals this week. The Red Sox had rumored interest in both, and the team must now look to pivot. According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, the Red Sox “remain interested” in Bo Bichette of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Bichette is one of the worst defensive shortstops in baseball, but the Red Sox would not need him at shortstop. They already have Trevor Story, who had a resurgent season this year. Bichette could slot in at second base.

The Red Sox’s current roster would make it difficult to accommodate Bichette, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell. That could change if Alex Bregman leaves and third base opens up, but considering he is reportedly the Red Sox’s top priority, that seems unlikely.

Bichette is a good enough hitter to justify adding him to a crowded infield. He has led the American League in hits twice in his career. Last season, he was leading baseball in hits before a knee injury in the final month of the regular season landed him on the injured list.

Bichette was not good in 2024, but bounced back this year, proving he is worthy of a lucrative contract. He slashed .311/.357/.483 in 139 games. He also hit 18 home runs and collected 94 RBIs.

Bichette would not directly satisfy the Red Sox’s desire to add power. However, he would bring more power to second base than they had last season. Additionally, it would give the Red Sox a capable hitter near the top of their lineup.

He ranked in the 86th percentile for strikeout percentage last season. His whiff rate was in the 83rd percentile, despite his chase rate being in the 12th percentile. He is a tough out and knows how to work at-bats.

Fans are waiting for the Red Sox to make an impactful signing. Could Bichette be Boston’s first big swing in free agency this year?
