Recently, The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier named Bo Bichette as one of the Red Sox’s primary targets, but MLB insider Jon Heyman revealed where he ranks among targets.
During a livestream for Bleacher Report, Heyman revealed that the Red Sox view Bichette as a fallback option. Their top target is still Alex Bregman, and Bichette, along with all of the other players they have been linked to, are simply backup plans.
“Boston is a possibility for Bichette as well, but he seems like a fallback to them right now,” Heyman said on a Bleacher Report livestream on Monday. “Bregman is probably their top choice. They’ve done a lot of (Ketel) Marte talking, but certainly, Boston is a possibility for Bichette as well.”
Bichette is a great player and would certainly help the Red Sox’s lineup. He has led the American League in hits twice and was on pace to lead all of baseball in hits before an injury in the final month of the regular season. However, Boston has reportedly had Bregman at the top of its wishlist all offseason.
Bregman vs. Bichette is an interesting debate, but what Bregman did in the Red Sox clubhouse last season is likely why the Red Sox view him as the best fit for their team. Additionally, they already know how he can perform in their lineup.
Bregman slashed .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs last season. The Red Sox added Willson Contreras this offseason as well, so the lineup already figures to be better than last season. Additionally, Bichette would likely have to switch positions to play on the Red Sox.
He is not a strong defender at shortstop, plus Boston has Trevor Story. Bichette is one of the worst defensive shortstops in baseball, so there is no telling what his defense will be like at second or third base.
Bregman is a solid defender at third base, fits in the clubhouse and may even be cheaper than Bichette. It’s no surprise the Red Sox want him back.
