Pete Alonso could be a great addition to the Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox are certainly a team to keep an eye on at the winter meetings this week. They have already made some big-time pitching additions, but could still be looking to make a splash in the position player market.
Pete Alonso is one of the best free agents available this winter, and ESPN’s Jorge Castillo predicted that he would sign with the Red Sox at the winter meetings.
“Craig Breslow, Boston’s chief baseball officer, has been clear about his desire to acquire a right-handed slugger for the middle of the order,” wrote Castillo on Monday. “Not many players are better qualified for that role than the right-handed-hitting Alonso, whose 264 home runs since his debut in 2019 are the third most in baseball behind Aaron Judge and (Kyle) Schwarber.”
Adding Alonso to the Red Sox lineup and getting Roman Anthony back could do wonders for the Red Sox’s home run numbers. The Red Sox ranked 15th in home runs overall, and ranked 27th after Anthony went down.
Alonso is not a great defender at first base, but his agent, Scott Boras, has noted that he is willing to play more as a designated hitter moving forward. Alonso has not spent much time in that role throughout his career, but doing so more often could help mask his defensive woes.
In 1,008 career games, Alonso has only appeared as a designated hitter 60 times. He rarely misses games, never missing more than 10 games in a season. He is one of the best hitters in baseball and is looking for a long-term deal this winter.
A long-term deal eluded the All-Star slugger last offseason, but he improved his numbers in 2024 and was named an All-Star again last season. He will not be cheap, but the damage he could do at Fenway Park may be worth every penny.
