Brown's in some impressive company
Without Jayson Tatum, the Boston Celtics needed Jaylen Brown to step up this season, especially in the scoring department. So far, he’s delivered.
Brown is having the best season of his career and an MVP-caliber year, averaging personal bests in numerous categories. His scoring totals have been particularly impressive, as he’s already notched at least 30 points in 13 of his 23 games this season, including six of his last seven.
Now in his 10th NBA season, Brown is averaging 29.1 points per game, which is easily a career high. It’s also on pace to be the third-highest single-season mark in Celtics history, behind only Jayson Tatum (30.1, 2022-23) and Larry Bird (29.9, 1987-88).
Brown has managed to improve his accuracy despite taking more shots this season, which isn’t easy to do. He leads the NBA in 2-point attempts per game (15.7) and is averaging a career-high 21.6 field-goal attempts per game. He’s also getting to the line more often, averaging a career-high 7.1 free-throw attempts per game.
Despite carrying a larger offensive load, Brown has the second-highest field goal percentage (49.6 percent) and best free-throw percentage (78.5 percent) of his career. He also has his best 3-point shooting percentage (36.3 percent) since the 2020-21 campaign.
Brown is also averaging a personal best in assists at 4.9 per game, so he’s still keeping his teammates involved and facilitating the offense. Time will tell if he’ll be able to maintain his heightened scoring pace for the entire season, or at least until Tatum returns from his Achilles injury.
