'He’s been so good for us'
The Boston Bruins suffered a 5-4 road loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.
Boston struggled out of the gates as the Bruins trailed 3-0, not even two minutes into the second period. The Red Wings then led 5-2 just under four minutes into the third period, and the Bruins’ head coach, Marco Sturm, pulled Jeremy Swayman for Joonas Korpisalo.
Following the game, Sturm said Swayman wasn’t pulled for his performance, but rather to send a statement to the Bruins as they were playing poorly in front of the star goalie.
“It almost wasn’t fair to (Swayman) because of the way the team played in front of him,” Sturm said on Tuesday, as seen on NESN’s postgame show. “Maybe he could have saved one or two, but he’s been so good for us that I wanted to get Joonas in there.”
Swayman finished the game, stopping 18 of the 23 shots he faced. In relief, Korpisalo stopped all nine shots he faced.
The Bruins and Red Wings were playing a home-and-home set after Boston defeated Detroit 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday.
With the loss to Detroit on Tuesday, the Bruins fell to 15-13-0 and are now outside of a playoff spot.
Boston will return to the ice on Thursday at home against the St. Louis Blues.
