Patriots’ Stefon Diggs ‘Surprised’ By How Good Drake Maye Already Is

'I’m just super proud of him'

Stefon Diggs didn’t realize he would align with an MVP candidate when joining Drake Maye on the New England Patriots.

Maye continued a standout second season with five touchdown passes and two incompletions in a 42-10 win over the New York Jets. He tossed one of those scores to Diggs, who caught all six targets for 101 yards and a touchdown.

After the game, Diggs admitted to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo that he didn’t think Maye would be this elite so soon.

“No, I did not,” Diggs said. “He surprised all of us. I knew he was going to be good, but nah, I didn’t know he was going to be this good. I’m just super proud of him. He approaches this game in the right way, man. I look forward to seeing more of him.”

Maye became the first NFL player to ever finish a game with five touchdown passes, 250 passing yards and a 90 percent completion rate. He also joined Drew Bledsoe and Tom Brady as the third Patriots quarterback to reach 4,000 passing yards in a season.

The former No. 3 pick has taken a massive second-year leap with help from Diggs, who has garnered a team-high 970 receiving yards in his first season with the Patriots. The wide receiver unlocked a $500,000 bonus on Sunday by reaching 80 receptions.

Maye told reporters after the game that he wasn’t aware of that incentive and didn’t make any extra effort to find Diggs.

“No, but I’ll make sure to tell him he needs to buy me dinner or something,” Maye said. “So, whatever. We’re not looking to hunt up incentives. We’re just looking to hunt up wins.”
