Red Sox Get Encouraging Update On Top Trade Target, But There’s A Catch

Could Boston make another trade for a starting pitcher?

The Boston Red Sox have been busy early this offseason, but there’s a new sense of urgency surrounding the team after they missed out on both Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso in free agency. With both guys landing big-money deals, that could lead the Red Sox to turn back to the trade market.

Boston has already swung a pair of trades for Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, bolstering their starting rotation, which was one of their primary goals entering the offseason. However, the team has continued to get linked to some of the top pitching trade targets across the league, with one of them being Freddy Peralta of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Rumors have swirled that the Brewers could look to move Peralta in a blockbuster deal this offseason before his contract expires after the 2026 season. According to a recent report, Peralta appears more likely to get traded than Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, but it remains to be seen if Boston is still interested in acquiring him.

“The chances of a Peralta trade, based on what sources have told me in the last 24 to 48 hours, are at least a little bit higher than the chances of a Skubal trade,” Jon Morosi reported on “MLB Network Hot Stove.” “The Astros, the Yankees (are) among the teams that have checked in on Freddy Peralta.”

While Peralta is up for grabs, Boston’s prior moves for Gray and Oviedo could prevent them from bringing him to town. At this stage of the game, bolstering the lineup seems to be a more pressing need, and the front office appears to be looking for avenues to address this part of their roster.

Rumors will surely continue to link Peralta to the Red Sox, but it feels more likely that if the team swings another trade, it’d be for a guy like Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte. Crazier things have happened, though, and all eyes will be on Boston as fans wait to see what its next move ends up being.
