Red Sox Get Major Ketel Marte Trade Update

Marte has five teams on his no-trade list

The Boston Red Sox have been linked to Ketel Marte in recent weeks as rumors of the Arizona Diamondbacks trading him start to grow.

Marte has won a Silver Slugger in each of the last two seasons and is one of the best offensive second basemen in baseball. As the Red Sox look to add more power to their lineup, Marte makes plenty of sense for them.

He is under club control for the next five seasons, and has a $11.5 million player option in 2031. Trading for him will be easier for the Red Sox than some teams, as they are not on his no-trade list, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

“Marte has a five-team no-trade list – the Athletics, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, Giants and Cardinals, according to people briefed on his contract,” Rosenthal wrote on Monday. “He will gain full no-trade protection as a player with 10 years of major-league service, five consecutive with the same team, on the 10th day of the 2026 season.”

Marte slashed .283/.376/.517 last season. He has hit 64 home runs in the last two seasons and has been named an All-Star in consecutive seasons. He would certainly fill the Red Sox’s need for power, but could be a tough fit positionally.

The Red Sox’s infield is already crowded, assuming Alex Bregman re-signs, with Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell both being legitimate options at second base. Mayer and Campbell were both top-three prospects coming into the season.

Campbell started the season in the big leagues and signed an extension soon after. Mayer made his debut in the middle of the season and played third base while Bregman was hurt. Both figure to be important pieces for the Red Sox in the future, and adding Marte could push both of them out of the field.

Marte would seemingly take over as the everyday second baseman if he were acquired. Alex Cora would have to get creative with Mayer and Campbell to get them in the lineup.
