Red Sox Receive Positive Tidbit In Alex Bregman Pursuit

Bregman might have to wait to sign...

The Boston Red Sox’s pursuit of free agent Alex Bregman took a turn on Tuesday.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that a “surprise entrant” entered the sweepstakes for the free agent third baseman, and are “kicking the tires” on the possibility of bringing him in. Underdog Fantasy’s Jared Carrabis responded to the report by saying they were “more than just kicking the tires” on the veteran.

The Arizona Diamondbacks — the team they were talking about — just need to take care of business before they actually make an offer to Bregman.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal followed up by stating it would “likely would be possible only” if the club could first trade superstar second baseman Ketel Marte.

The Red Sox likely appreciate that nugget, as many believed the timing of those reports would accelerate trade talks on Marte — which reportedly have been up and down for both sides. Boston can now afford to remain patient in its negotiations in both trade and free agency — for now.
