This backs up MLB insider Ken Rosenthal's Tuesday morning report
The Boston Red Sox’s two biggest moves this offseason have come via trade in their acquisitions of starting pitchers Johan Oviedo and Sonny Gray.
One of their reported targets in free agency — designated hitter Kyle Schwarber — is reportedly re-signing with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Longtime New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is still a possibility for Boston, but Red Sox insider Peter Abraham reported on Tuesday afternoon that president of baseball operations Craig Breslow’s main priority remains re-signing All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman.
“Retaining Bregman is clearly the priority for the Red Sox. Sources inside and outside the organization agree on that,” the Boston Globe columnist posted on Bluesky. “Question is if they flex their financial muscles and stay in the mix for Alonso, who has great interest in playing at Fenway.”
This backs up MLB insider Ken Rosenthal’s report on Tuesday morning that said Bregman “still appears to be the Red Sox’s No. 1 target.”
With Gray and Oviedo joining an already solid starting rotation including ace Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello, Breslow could shift his attention toward improving Boston’s offense.
Bregman finished third on the team in home runs (18) and walks (51) in 2025, despite being limited to 114 games, while also posting a .273/.360/.462 slash line.
