The Red Sox need a Plan B if Alex Bregman packs his bags
The Boston Red Sox are on the clock, and it’s getting late early when it comes to re-signing third baseman Alex Bregman.
It’s no secret that chief baseball officer Craig Breslow’s top priority is bringing back the three-time All-Star.
But the Bregman market is expanding, and it’s possible he ends up pricing himself out of Boston.
So at that point, where do the Red Sox turn?
They’ve been linked to free-agent shortstop Bo Bichette and Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte, who’s on the trade market.
But here’s a name to consider: Eugenio Suarez.
The 34-year-old third baseman is a two-time All-Star who tied his career high in 2025 with 49 home runs. He also drove in a career-best 118 runs this year.
On top of that, Suarez has hit at least 30 home runs in six of his 12 big-league seasons. And he’s durable, having played at least 145 games in each of the last four seasons.
Of course, Suarez does come with one big concern: strikeouts. He has way too many of them. He’s been a league leader in whiffs three times, including 2023, when he topped the American League with a career-high 214 strikeouts.
But the Red Sox need a power bat, preferably a right-handed hitter, and Suarez fits the bill.
However Boston can’t wait too long because other clubs are interested as well, including the Seattle Mariners.
Consider what Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said to MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM:
“We love Geno. Geno brings a ton not just on the field, the things that people see … but off the field.
“His steady presence, great makeup, [and] what he brings to a clubhouse every day, it’s really hard to replicate. So we’ve maintained contact with Geno’s reps all winter long,” Hollander added.
Of course, that sounds like what the Red Sox have been saying about Bregman and his impact on the club on and off the field.
Will Bregman run it back in Boston? Or will the Red Sox pivot at the hot corner? We should have an answer by the time pitchers and catchers report to spring training exactly seven weeks from today.
