There are many reasons.
The Toronto Blue Jays are in on Alex Bregman, as reported by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal over the weekend.
Piggybacking off of the Rosenthal report, MLB Trade Rumors’ Charlie Wright put together a compelling argument as to why Bregman makes a ton of sense for Toronto.
“Toronto’s current plan at third base seems to be a combination of Addison Barger, Ernie Clement, and Davis Schneider,” Wright wrote. “The Blue Jays’ third basemen ranked 10th in OPS last season. Clement and Barger split the role fairly evenly, with Will Wagner and Isiah Kiner-Faleda occasionally mixing in.”
“Third base isn’t a position that seems like a glaring weakness, but a longer-term view of the roster makes Bregman a more sensible fit,” Wright continued. “George Springer and Daulton Varsho are both free agents after 2026. Their potential departures would open up outfield and DH opportunities for Barger, Schneider, and company. While Clement and Barger are solid players, Toronto would have no issue reshuffling the lineup to make room for an addition like Bregman.”
Wright also pointed out that the Blue Jays are obviously okay with spending a bunch of money, even in a manner and style that other clubs (big-market ones included) might deem excessive.
Toronto is desperate to return to the World Series and come away with a bette results after coming within inches of a title in November. Adding a guy like Bregman and his two rings to the clubhouse would enhance the Blue Jays’ championship DNA.
It goes without saying that Toronto would do much to deflate the Red Sox by poaching a player that many assumed would be returning to Boston in 2026 and beyond.
