Why Patriots Should Pursue Matthew Judon Reunion After Recent Release

Judon could provide a big late-season spark for New England

The New England Patriots will likely be taking note of several big moves that the Miami Dolphins made on Wednesday morning in the wake of being eliminated from playoff contention. One of the more notable moves saw former Patriots’ star pass rusher Matthew Judon get released by the team.

Judon’s first season with the Dolphins didn’t exactly go as expected. Despite playing in 13 games, Judon has just 19 tackles, one pass deflection and no sacks. With the postseason no longer a possibility for Miami, moving on from Judon and giving his snaps to younger guys makes a lot of sense.

However, Judon could be a useful asset for a playoff team, such as the Patriots. Judon enjoyed a successful three-year stint with New England, as he racked up 32 sacks in 39 games during his time with the team.

In his two seasons since leaving the Pats, Judon hasn’t exactly been all that impactful, but he could still have something to offer as a situational pass rusher, which just so happens to be one of the team’s biggest roster needs currently. Behind Harold Landry III and K’Lavon Chaison, there isn’t much depth for New England when it comes to its pass rush.

Over the past couple of weeks, the Patriots’ front seven on defense has struggled to win at the line of scrimmage. Part of that is due to Milton Williams being on injured reserve with an ankle injury, but after watching the Bills’ offense torch the Pats’ defense in Week 16, it’s clear some help could be used at this spot.

Judon could be the perfect answer to the problem. Sure, his stint in New England didn’t exactly come to a great end, but Judon has previously expressed an interest in returning to town. And if the Patriots can generate more pressure on opposing quarterbacks, that could help their defense round into form before it’s too late.

Several teams will likely show interest in Judon (assuming he clears waivers), but the Patriots’ familiarity with him could give them a leg up when it comes to their potential pursuit of him. If the stars align for New England, reuniting with Judon could be just what this defense needs as the playoffs draw near.
