The Belichick Hall of Fame drama has taken another turn
The New England Patriots are gearing up for Super Bowl LX, but NFL fans everywhere have been distracted by the preparation for the big game by a shocking development involving Bill Belichick and his Hall of Fame candidacy.
Thanks in large part to his work with the Patriots, Belichick was widely expected to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame this year, even though it was only his first year on the ballot. On Tuesday night, though, a bombshell report emerged saying that Belichick would not be selected to the Hall of Fame this year.
The same report indicated that Hall of Fame general manager Bill Polian was a leading voice in suggesting that Belichick needs to “wait a year” for enshrinement into the Hall as punishment for his involvement in the Spygate and Deflategate scandals. In a surprise turn, though, Polian is now claiming he voted for Belichick to get into the Hall of Fame.
“I voted for coach Belichick in the Hall of Fame selection meeting,” Polian said as part of a statement he read on Sirius XM Radio. “The Pro Football Hall of Fame has confirmed that fact through the auditors of the selection process.
Again, I’ll state that I never said that I believe that coach Belichick should ‘wait a year’ for enshrinement. This has been confirmed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame, numerous selectors who were in the room and my vote for coach Belichick.”
Polian initially said he couldn’t remember whether or not he voted for Belichick, so this is an interesting change in tune from him. Despite the fact that Belichick did not get enough votes to get into the Hall of Fame, nobody has publicly come out and said they did not vote for him.
Who opted against voting for Belichick is unknown, but the backlash the Hall of Fame voters have received in the wake of this shocking snub has been hard to ignore. Belichick will make it into the Hall of Fame eventually, but there’s no doubt that this is an egregious miss by the selection committee.
