Bills’ Sean McDermott Replacement Floated By NFL Insider

This would be unexpected ...

The Buffalo Bills fired Sean McDermott on Monday, and there’s already one name circulating in connection to Buffalo’s fresh head coaching vacancy.

Within a couple of hours of the McDermott news going public, The Athletic’s Dianni Russini connected a very interesting name to the Bills: Brian Daboll.

According to Russini, the Buffalo native Daboll is loved by Bills QB Josh Allen. Daboll was fired by the New York Giants in the middle of the 2025 season.

Whether it’s Daboll or someone else, whoever steps into the head coaching role in Buffalo will have the benefit of working with arguably the NFL’s best quarterback in his prime. McDermott, meanwhile, has communicated that he’d like to continue coaching, and there are plenty of HC vacancies around the league.

McDermott took over as head coach of the Bills in 2017, inheriting a team that had missed the playoffs for 17 straight years. He quickly turned things around, leading the Bills to a postseason berth in his first season. Over nine years, McDermott compiled a regular-season record of 83-49, with eight playoff appearances and five consecutive AFC East division titles from 2020 to 2024.

His defensive-minded approach built a resilient squad, bolstered by quarterback Josh Allen’s emergence. The Bills reached the AFC Championship Game twice, in 2020 and 2022, but fell short of the Super Bowl each time, often in close contests marked by key turnovers or late-game miscues. Despite consistent success, critics have pointed to McDermott’s postseason shortcomings.
