Olney predicts where Bregman will end up
It’s been two months since Alex Bregman opted out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox, and he still remains unsigned. The Red Sox are among several teams that have pursued him this offseason, but they’ve yet to strike a deal.
That could change soon, however, based on Buster Olney’s encouraging update on Boston’s negotiations with Bregman.
“I think Alex Bregman is gonna go back to the Red Sox. From what I understand, the Red Sox have made an aggressive offer on him,” Olney said on Friday’s episode of “1st Up.”
That’s good news for Boston fans, especially in light of Thursday’s concerning update from MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, who reported that “the Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks may be the two most aggressive clubs in the hunt for Bregman.”
Fortunately, it sounds like the Red Sox are being aggressive as well. Olney did not reveal the specifics of their reported offer to Bregman, but it’s probably an attractive and competitive one if Olney expects the All-Star third baseman to return to Boston, which other insiders have predicted as well.
Bregman is coming off a strong season with the Red Sox where he bounced back offensively and helped lead them to their first playoff appearance in four years. Both sides have expressed interest in a reunion, and based on Olney’s update, they could be getting close.
Spring Training is six weeks away, so Boston still has plenty of time to get a deal done. Bregman didn’t sign until mid-February last year after waiting out the market, so he and Scott Boras appear to be following a similar strategy this winter.
