Gafford would fit what Boston needs right now.
The Boston Celtics’ framework for the February 5 trade deadline is well-established, even if their strategy on buying or selling is still fluid. If they decide to enhance the roster, they hold viable options in Anfernee Simons ($27.7 million expiring pact) and Sam Hauser ($10 million obligation), aiming primarily at a big to strengthen the interior.
A notion presented by The Athletic’s Jay King is pursuing Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford, especially given the team’s current depth down low.
Gafford provides reliable rim defense and finishing ability.
“With Anthony Davis’ future uncertain and Derek Lively out for the season, the Dallas frontcourt isn’t overflowing with options like it appeared to be at the start of the season,” King wrote on Wednesday. “Still, at 15-25, the Mavericks could sell off veteran players such as Gafford. He would offer the Celtics a new layer of rim protection while also serving as a lob threat. The big man’s three-year, $40 million contract extension begins next season.”
Gafford’s extension, starting in 2026-27 at around $13.4 million annually, keeps him budget-friendly moving forward. He has logged 29 games for Dallas this season, contributing 7.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 1.3 blocks in 20.8 minutes per outing.
Recent showings include six points and 10 rebounds against Denver on January 14 and six points with seven rebounds versus Chicago on January 10, helping the Mavericks navigate a challenging period. Gafford stays effective as a protector near the basket when deployed.
Gafford was drafted 38th overall by Chicago in the 2019 Draft. Throughout his seven-year journey, he has appeared in 407 games, averaging 9.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks with a 70.4 percent field goal mark.
