Christian Gonzalez Injury: Mike Vrabel Comments After Star’s Exit

Gonzalez exited in the fourth quarter with a head injury

A major question mark awaits the Patriots after passing their first-round test.

Will star cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who suffered a head injury late in the fourth quarter of New England’s 16-3 win over the Chargers, be ready for the divisional round?

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel weighed in on Gonzalez’s injury when he appeared on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Monday morning.

“Yeah, I did talk to him (Sunday night),” Vrabel said. “So we’ll go through whatever the steps are that would require him to pass through whatever he needs to do. Without having seen him today, I can’t sit here and speculate. I just know they wouldn’t let him go back in the game.”

Gonzalez initially was deemed questionable to return due to a head injury, which came on a pass break up against Chargers wideout Quentin Johnston. He then was ruled out with a few minutes remaining in the two-possession game.

Gonzalez told reporters he was “fine” after the win, but did not speak extensively.

The lockdown cornerback did not allow a catch against the Chargers, turning away all five attempts which Justin Herbert threw his way. Gonzalez was one of the handful of impressive defensive performers, and his status will be crucial when New England returns to the field Sunday against either the Steelers or Texans.
