Did Patriots Corner Really Fix Mouthguard WHILE Intercepting Catching Interception?

This is outrageous

Carlton Davis had a strange game against the Houston Texans.

The Patriots cornerback committed three bad penalties in New England’s eventual 28-16 divisional-round win at Gillette Stadium. However, Davis also caught one of C.J. Stroud’s four interceptions, one of which saw him do something that was equal parts incredible, athletic and humorous.

First, look at Davis’ first-quarter interception at full speed:

Now, look at this slow-mo replay, which shows Davis fixing his mouthguard while diving to complete the interception:

Honestly, it’s hard to know what to say about that play.

On the one hand, Davis showed remarkable coordination and athleticism. On the other hand, it’s fair to wonder why he’s worried about his mouthguard in that kind of moment.

Imagine the criticism he’d be facing had he successfully re-inserted the mouthguard but not completed the interception.

Regardless, Davis and the Patriots beat the Texans to secure their first spot in an AFC Championship Game since the 2018 campaign, which ended with a Super Bowl title. They’ll face the Denver Broncos at Empower Field this Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.

It’s worth noting that Davis left Sunday’s win late in the fourth quarter due to a head injury. His status will be monitored throughout this week, as will the status of injured receiver Mack Hollins.
