'You Drake Maye haters are just such losers'
Kay Adams had no patience for Drake Maye criticism after the New England Patriots earned a spot in Super Bowl LX.
The Patriots defeated the Denver Broncos in a 10-7 defensive stalemate on a snowy Sunday. Maye settled for a season-low 86 passing yards, but the 23-year-old made several key plays with his legs to win the AFC Championship Game on the road.
Adams has defended Maye and the Patriots from doubters throughout their Super Bowl run, and the FanDuel TV went back on the attack during Monday’s “Up & Adams.”
“Oh my gosh,” an exasperated Adams said. “You Drake Maye haters are just such losers.”
Adams pointed out all the variables that deterred the second-year quarterback from dialing up his usual downfield fireworks.
“Drake Maye played the game they needed him to play to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl,” Adams reasoned. “Blizzard conditions, you don’t have home-field — did you hear how loud it was through the television? … They’re up against the No. 2 defense in the league.”
The former NFL Network host felt Maye accomplished his primary objective in Sunday’s game by avoiding any turnovers.
“All I needed to see, don’t F it up,” Adams said. “Don’t turn over the ball one, two or five times, and you’ll probably go to the — he didn’t make a mistake. One mistake out there would have lost it. That’s how I feel. He knew not to try too much.”
Maye instead “picked his spots” and “made a bunch of big plays in big moments.” Adams pointed out Maye sealing the win with a gutsy third-down bootleg run that he called on his own.
“The stones to do that in the biggest moment to get the Pats the win, isn’t that what matters?” Adams asked.
Adams then showed a graphic comparing Maye’s first three playoff games to those of a mystery quarterback. Patriots fans probably could have guessed that the other passer was Tom Brady, who had a lower quarterback rating (77.3) in the 2001 postseason than Maye’s 84.0.
Adams called it “stupid” to care about stats over wins in the playoffs, noting that Maye defeated three top-five defenses.
“It was very impressive,” Adams said. “And now he has the chance to be the youngest quarterback ever to win a Super Bowl in NFL history. Let’s go.”
