Surtain is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year
The New England Patriots will face the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game, and Kayshon Boutte feels confident before facing Patrick Surtain II.
Boutte scored against his college teammate, turned two-time First-Team All-Pro, Derek Stingley Jr. last game. Now, he could potentially see an opportunity to score against two-time All-Pro and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Surtain.
Boutte noted that his experience against Stingley in college practices played a role in his success against him in the NFL. Boutte matched up against Surtain in college and is confident going into the game.
“A lot of respect,” Boutte said when asked about Surtain on Monday. “Played against him in college, too, my first year there. I would say it’s a familiar matchup. I’m kind of used to him, great corner.”
Great corner might be an understatement for Surtain. He has made the Pro Bowl four times in the last five years and was a Second-Team All-Pro this season as well. Surtain, shadows opposing team’s top target oftentimes, but in zone coverage or matchups where there is no clear No. 1, he can shut down an entire side of the field essentially.
Teams do not target him much, and when they do, there is not much success. He has given up one touchdown on 61 targets this season. His numbers are similar to his Defensive Player of the Year season in 2024.
In college, Boutte had eight catches for 111 yards against the University of Alabama in 2020. However, the game was a blowout, and most of those yards did not come against Surtain. Boutte has 692 yards and seven touchdowns this season, including the playoffs. However, Denver’s defense presents a new challenge.
