'We talk about not going in the blender'
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye didn’t have his usual outing in New England’s 28-16 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday.
Maye completed 16 of 27 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns. However, he threw an interception and fumbled the ball four times, losing two of them.
Head coach Mike Vrabel dropped his honest assessment of Maye’s performance following the win.
“We talk about not going in the blender,” Vrabel said on Sunday, via WEEI’s Tom Carroll. “And I think it’s hard. They put pressure on us, and we know we’ve got to take care of the ball. Drake knows that. But to be able to stay the course and to trust Kayshon (Boutte) and give him a great ball that was him or nobody, and those guys have kind of done that all year, when we needed a play, they’ve been able to do that for us.”
Although Maye struggled with ball control, he made a spectacular touchdown pass to Boutte at the beginning of the fourth quarter, helping the Patriots build a 12-point lead.
Maye is bound to experience his fair share of ups and downs in the postseason, especially since he’s just a second-year quarterback playing in his first playoffs. However, he bounced back impressively, not allowing his ball-control issues to affect the outcome of his throws in crucial situations.
