Maye is dealing with an illness
The New England Patriots are going to the Super Bowl, but their quarterback, Drake Maye, is not 100%.
Maye has been limited in practice this week, dealing with a shoulder injury, and he was not spotted at practice during the portion of practice open to the media. Mike Vrabel provided an explanation for his absence during Friday’s press conference.
Vrabel noted that Maye was still dealing with the shoulder injury, but he is also dealing with an illness, so he did not participate in practice.
Maye’s shoulder remains something to keep an eye on leading into the Super Bowl. However, his absence from practice today was seemingly not shoulder-related. Vrabel told reporters that Maye would have practiced today had it not been for the illness.
Maye still participated in meetings per Vrabel, and participated in meetings. Vrabel also confirmed that Maye was able to throw in Thursday’s practice on a limited basis.
The Seahawks have an elite defense, and the Patriots will need Maye to be sharp to win their seventh Super Bowl in franchise history. Maye is an MVP candidate and is a key reason for the Patriots’ success.
It seems unlikely that Maye misses the Super Bowl, but on the off chance he is not good to go, Joshua Dobbs will be the starter. Dobbs signed with the Patriots in the offseason and has started 15 NFL games.
Vrabel noted that Dobbs prepared like a starter with Maye out of practice. Maye is still expected to play in the Super Bowl and should return to practice when he’s feeling better. Vrabel has noted that players on the team have dealt with illness over the last six weeks, and it’s not out of the ordinary.
