Milton Williams spoke on how the Patriots are viewed
It wasn’t pretty, but the New England Patriots punched their ticket to the Super Bowl with a win over the Denver Broncos.
The Patriots’ defense has been phenomenal during the playoff run. With their offense facing three elite defenses in the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans and Broncos, the Patriots’ defense has made sure they keep opposing offenses off the board.
The Patriots beat the Chargers 16-3, beat the Texans 28-16 and beat the Broncos 10-7 in the elements on Sunday. However, Milton Williams still thinks the Patriots won’t get the credit they deserve, at least not yet.
“We’ve got a lot of guys that’ve been counted out,” Williams told MassLive’s Chris Mason on Sunday. “Nobody really believed in us and what we can do. They’re probably going to say, ‘It’s just how (the Broncos) played. We ain’t do nothing. It’s what they did.’ We’ve got one more game to go out there and take care of business and see if we will get some credit then.”
Williams signed a four-year, $104 million deal with the Patriots in the offseason. He has played in two Super Bowls and will play in his third in a couple of weeks. He won the Super Bowl last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, logging two sacks in the game, so he knows what a championship team looks like.
“Defense wins championships” is the age-old saying, and the Patriots have played like a championship defense this postseason. The Broncos had just 181 yards of total offense. Despite Bo Nix not playing, it was an impressive showing for the Patriots’ defense.
Against the Texans, the Patriots’ defense had four interceptions, three sacks and a touchdown. The defense had six sacks against the Chargers. Against the Broncos stellar offensive line, the defense had three sacks. Williams spoke on the praise the Broncos’ offensive line received going into the game.
“I heard that all week,” Williams said to Mason. “I don’t care about numbers and all that. Whatever. We’ve gotta go out there and we’ve gotta play. All that stuff doesn’t matter. When you get between the lines, we’ll see what’s going to happen. Cut the tape on and see what happened today.”
Williams had two quarterback hits on Sunday and has two sacks during the Patriots’ playoff run.
