Pirates Predicted To Sign Potential Red Sox Free Agent Target

Suárez could be a great addition to the Red Sox offense

The Boston Red Sox have been active this offseason, but have primarily relied on the trade market to add to their team.

The Red Sox lost Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs, and a potential backup plan in Bo Bichette signed with the New York Mets. The Red Sox still have options to add an impact bat to their lineup.

The Red Sox are reportedly still looking into trades to add an impactful position player to their team, but Eugenio Suárez as a free agent also makes sense. He plays third base and could be a direct replacement for Bregman. He is one of the best bats remaining in free agency, and other teams could also be targeting him.

Suárez could be a great fit for the Red Sox and may not cost as much as alternatives. He is an older player who could be willing to sign a shorter deal. However, that makes his market wider. ESPN’s Tristan Cockcroft predicted the Pittsburgh Pirates would land him and not the Red Sox.

“I’m already on board for a Pirates-led National League Central this year, and what better way for them to make a push in that direction than to address their severe power shortage with one of the best power hitters still on the free agent market?” wrote Cockcroft on Friday. “Suarez might accept a shorter deal with higher AAV and/or a post-2026 opt-out — think two years, $42 million — and he would balance what’s currently a lefty-heavy Pirates lineup that is also thin on the left side of the infield.”

Suárez was one of the most sought-after players at the trade deadline last year. He hit 36 home runs in 106 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks before getting dealt to the Seattle Mariners.

He did not hit well with the Mariners, who play at the pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park. However, he finished the season with 49 home runs and an .824 OPS. He was named an All-Star for the second time in his career.

He would bring plenty of power to the Red Sox lineup, and adding him would allow Marcelo Mayer to play at second base. However, the Pirates also need offense and may be more desperate to pay Suárez.
