Red Sox And This NL Team Reportedly Competing For Alex Bregman

When will Bregman's free agency end?

The Boston Red Sox might have serious company in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes in the form of the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs just traded for Edward Cabrera, but MLB Network’s Jon Morosi believes they have another big move in them.

“The Cubs are not done yet, and the one free agent bat that they remain linked to (is) Alex Bregman,” Morosi said on Thursday. “I do believe that the two strongest suitors right now for Bregman are the Cubs and the Red Sox.”

Morosi said that while the Cubs already have third base filled, they could definitely move some pieces around, either through trades or positional adjustments in-house.

Morosi suggested that the Cubs could move Matt Shaw to second base (or trade him) and/or trade Nico Hoerner.

“If there is a big bat coming to the north side, I believe the best opportunity for them will be Alex Bregman,” Morosi reiterated.

Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox last February, marking a new chapter after his long tenure with the Houston Astros. The veteran third baseman adapted quickly to Fenway Park, delivering a solid performance despite a mid-season quadriceps strain that forced him to miss six weeks or so.

Bregman appeared in 114 games for Boston, batting .273 with an on-base percentage of .360 and a slugging percentage of .462, resulting in an .822 OPS. He contributed 18 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 64 runs scored. His strong plate discipline stood out, with a low strikeout rate and consistent power output. Early in the year, he earned AL Player of the Week honors in April after a scorching start that included a 5-for-5 game with two homers against the Tampa Bay Rays. He also secured his third career All-Star selection.

Following the season, Bregman opted out of the remaining years of his contract, entering free agency as one of the top infielders available.
