Red Sox Should Trade For Cubs Gold Glover After They Stole Alex Bregman

Nico Hoerner could be a great fit for the Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox will need to pivot if they want to add an impact bat now that Alex Bregman has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Chicago Cubs.

Many experts predict that the Red Sox will now shift their focus to Bo Bichette, who they have reportedly been talking to as well. However, they could look to make a trade to fill their need for a bat.

The Red Sox have been active traders already this winter. However, they could suddenly match up with the Cubs for a trade after they stole Bregman from them. With the addition of Bregman to Chicago’s infield, they have an extra infielder.

With Bregman slotted in as the everyday third baseman, the Cubs face a decision with Nico Hoerner and Matt Shaw. Shaw made his debut last season and was one of the top prospects in the organization. He is under club control through 2031.

Meanwhile, Hoerner has already been floated in trade rumors and is one year away from free agency. The Red Sox could use him to play second base, allowing Marcelo Mayer to play third base.

He was a Silver Slugger finalist last season and is a two-time Gold Glover at second base. He slashed .297/.345/.394 last season, but he could put up even better numbers at Fenway Park.

Hoerner would hit the open market after next season, but by then the hope would be that Kristian Campbell is ready to be the everyday second baseman, like the team hoped when they extended him last season.

It may seem odd to suggest the Red Sox trade with the team that just swiped their top free agent target. However, Craig Breslow has navigated the trade market well, and Hoerner is suddenly more available than ever.
