'Easily the most frazzled he's been'
Drake Maye’s Super Bowl debut was an unmitigated disaster for the New England Patriots, who got trounced 29-13 by the Seattle Seahawks.
Not only did the Patriots suffer their worst loss of the season, but Maye played terribly. He got sacked six times, committed three turnovers and had only 60 passing yards through the first three quarters.
It was Maye’s worst game of the season and one of the worst games of his career. It also capped off a brutal postseason for him following an MVP-caliber regular season.
Not even Bill Simmons, one of his biggest fans, could defend it.
“He was horrible. I’ve watched every snap of his career I think, and that was by far the most frazzled and terrible that he’s ever been in a game that I’ve watched,” Simmons said on “The Bill Simmons Podcast” following Sunday’s loss.
“He was missing open guys…There were spots and there were guys open and there were plays to make, and he just didn’t make the plays over and over again,” Simmons continued. “It was just really bad…He was way off.”
Simmons credited the Seahawks’ defense for making him uncomfortable and keeping him off balance all game with their relentless pressure and tight coverages. By the time Maye settled down and finally started making some plays in the fourth quarter, it was too late.
“It seemed like they sped the game up on him with the pressure that they had,” Simmons added, which was exacerbated by New England’s weak offensive line, particularly on the left side. “Easily the most frazzled he’s been. He was missing behind. He was throwing to the wrong guys. He was throwing too hard — that was one thing he never really did during the regular season…He just could never get the timing down.”
Maye wasn’t himself, and the Patriots lost the Super Bowl because of it.
