Bruins’ Joonas Koprisalo Said Getting Olympics Call Is ‘Great Honor’

'It's gonna be pretty cool'

The Boston Bruins have another Olympian.

Bruins backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo was named to Team Finland for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy. Korpisalo replaced Buffalo Sabres goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukonen due to an injury.

“It means a lot,” Korpisalo said on Tuesday after practice. “I mean, obviously, I feel bad for (Luukonen), (bad) timing for him, just one week before the Olympics. But I’m happy to jump in. It’s a great honor.”

Korpisalo will join his teammate Henri Jokiharju on Team Finland. Although Koprisalo likely is the team’s third goalie, the Bruins netminder said it is an honor to represent his country on the biggest stage.

“It’s an honor for me to follow those footsteps,” said Korpisalo. “Every kid in Finland grows up watching the Olympians, the national team of Finland. I grew up watching Tuukka (Rask) play his best hockey in those games, so it’s gonna be pretty cool.”

Although Korpisalo is eager to represent his country, the focus is on the Bruins, who will play the Florida Panthers on the road on Wednesday.

“For the team, a lot of confidence,” Korpisalo said. “You keep winning games, you trust the system, play within the system and I think all of that helps the goalies as well. (Jeremy Swayman) has been unreal. I’ve been chipping in myself and everyone’s feeling pretty good.
