A rapid bounce-back.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Tanner Engstrand is the new passing game coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.
Engstrand served as the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator in 2025, but was fired following the season, along with most of Aaron Glenn’s staff.
Engstrand has built a steady coaching career in football, progressing from college and alternative leagues into prominent NFL roles.
His early experience included serving as a graduate assistant and later offensive coordinator at the University of San Diego from 2005 to 2017, where he developed his expertise in quarterbacks and overall offensive strategy.
After a stint as an offensive analyst at Michigan in 2018 and as offensive coordinator for the DC Defenders in the XFL around 2020, he entered the NFL with the Detroit Lions in 2020 as an offensive assistant. He advanced quickly there, becoming offensive quality control coach in 2021, then tight ends coach and passing game coordinator in 2022, and finally full-time passing game coordinator from 2023 through 2024. During his Lions tenure, he contributed to a productive offensive unit.
In early 2025, Engstrand joined the Jets as offensive coordinator under Glenn, marking his first NFL play-calling role. The 2025 season proved challenging for the Jets’ offense, which struggled in key statistical categories.
Quickly rebounding, Engstrand has now landed this passing game coordinator role for the Falcons under new head coach Kevin Stefanski.
This move places him on a revamped staff alongside new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, offering another opportunity to shape passing concepts in the NFL.
