Hauser has been among the most frequently named Celtics players in potential deals ahead of Thursday's NBA trade deadline
Along with Anfernee Simons, forward Sam Hauser has been among the most frequently named Boston Celtics players in potential deals ahead of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline.
NBA staff writer Law Murray of The Athletic revealed his trade targets for all 30 teams on Monday and came up with a proposal for a deal with the San Antonio Spurs.
Murray’s trade idea would send the sharpshooting big man to San Antonio in exchange for fellow forward Jeremy Sochan.
“The Spurs have a lot of interesting scenarios, but I do wonder what happens at power forward,” he wrote. “You can never have too much shooting, so I have a Jeremy Sochan for Hauser swap here; I’m sure there would be some outgoing picks from San Antonio to complete a deal like this. Just keep an eye on the power forward spot for the Spurs, whether that’s Sochan or even starter Harrison Barnes.”
The Spurs selected Sochan with the ninth overall pick during the 2022 NBA Draft.
The Baylor product earned second team All-Rookie honors during the 2022-23 campaign after averaging 11.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists across 56 games. Sochan’s best season came in 2023-24 when he posted career highs in points (11.6), assists (3.4) and minutes per contest (29.6) over 74 games with a .438/.308/.771 shooting line.
He was limited to 54 contests last season and mostly came off San Antonio’s bench and has appeared in just 27 of the team’s first 49 games during the 2025-26.
Sochan’s averaged only 4.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 13.1 minutes per contest this season and has missed the last four games due to a quad injury.
“Boston went into this season acknowledging the financial considerations of the roster. But here it is battling for a top-two seed, as usual, even after parting ways with Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porziņģis and Al Horford while Jayson Tatum recovers from Achilles surgery,” Murray said. “Anfernee Simons was thought of as a rental, while Sam Hauser looked to be on borrowed time. This roster has been quite connected. If they do shake things up, an activity forward (on an expiring contract) makes sense, and Sochan would be an intriguing fit with Joe Mazzulla.”
If Hauser were to join the Spurs, it would reunite him with former Celtics teammate and fan favorite Luke Kornet.
The 30-year-old big man signed a four-year, $41 million deal with the Spurs last summer.
