Isiah Kiner-Falefa was on the Toronto Blue Jays last season
The Boston Red Sox made official the signing of Isiah Kiner-Falefa on Tuesday, and he seems to already be fitting in.
Last postseason, the Red Sox lost to the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card. The Yankees went on to play the Toronto Blue Jays, Kiner-Falefa’s former team. The Blue Jays obviously won the series on their way to the World Series, but Kiner-Falefa shed some more light on the Blue Jays mindset.
The Blue Jays were guaranteed to play one of their division rivals in the American League Division Series. However, Kiner-Falefa noted on Tuesday that the Blue Jays were glad the Red Sox lost because the Blue Jays felt like the Yankees were an easier matchup.
“We thought it was a better match-up for us the other way,” Kiner-Falefa told reporters. “We were watching that game and we were watching (Garrett) Crochet just dice up. And I think we had just lost two out of three and put us behind the Yankees or tied with them for the A.L. East lead. We definitely felt it was a tougher matchup for us. Once we saw the other team we were a lot happier. It was definitely a topic.”
Kiner-Falefa will not get a chance to help make the Red Sox even better than last season. The Yankees have not made many outside additions, while the Red Sox have been very busy.
Boston lost Alex Bregman, but added Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray, Ranger Suárez and Caleb Durbin. They will also be getting Roman Anthony back.
Kiner-Falefa noted that he will be a super utility for the Red Sox. He has won a Gold Glove as a third baseman, but he has played every position outside of first base in his big league career.
Red Sox fans will like that Kiner-Falefa is already throwing subtle jabs at the Yankees. He spent two seasons with the Yankees and will not be on the other side of the heated rivalry.
