Sunday's doubleheader was a disaster
For the last two weeks, Boston sports fans had been eagerly anticipating Super Bowl Sunday. It promised to be an exciting sports day for the region with the Boston Celtics hosting the New York Knicks in the afternoon, followed by the New England Patriots battling the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX in the evening.
Unfortunately, it turned out to be a sad day for New Englanders. Sunday’s exciting doubleheader was a massive letdown as the Celtics and Patriots both got blown out on national television, suffering some of the worst losses of their respective seasons.
The Knicks stomped Boston 111-89 at TD Garden, ending the Celtics’ five-game winning streak and setting a bad tone for the rest of the day. The 89 points were a season low for Boston, which suffered a horrific shooting performance by missing 34 of its 41 3-point attempts. The 22-point loss was its second biggest margin of defeat this season and worst since Nov. 1.
Worse, the loss moved New York ahead of the Celtics to second place in the Eastern Conference Standings.
Boston’s ugly loss proved to be a bad omen for New England, which got crushed 29-13 by the Seahawks later that evening. It was the Patriots’ biggest loss of the season by point differential and their second-worst Super Bowl loss in franchise history.
New England’s defense played well, but its offense was stagnant as Drake Maye floundered, going scoreless until the fourth quarter. The Patriots scored a couple of late touchdowns to avoid the shutout, but the game was already out of reach by then.
Fortunately for the Celtics, they play again on Wednesday and have a chance to put Sunday’s stinker behind them. New England doesn’t have that same luxury, however, after ending its Cinderella season on a down note.
Unfortunately for the Patriots, they’ll have to wait until September to redeem themselves.
