Jaelan Phillips has 28 career sacks
The New England Patriots made it to the Super Bowl last season, but their pass rush was not great.
They ranked near the bottom of the league with just 35 sacks, and now K’Lavon Chaisson will be a free agent as well. The Patriots could address the pass rush through free agency, and Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggested they target Jaelan Phillips.
Phillips was a first-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in the 2021 NFL Draft. He had 15.5 sacks in his first two seasons for the Patriots’ rival, playing in 34 games. He played in just 12 games the following two seasons.
Last season, he played in 17 games, but the Dolphins traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles. He finished the season with just five sacks, but it was his first healthy season in a while. He could be a solid addition for the Patriots.
“In eight regular-season games with the Eagles, Phillips logged two sacks, 17 quarterback pressures, four tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery,” Knox wrote on Wednesday. “His injury concerns won’t simply disappear, but the 26-year-old will receive strong long-term offers.”
Knox projected Phillips to sign a three-year, $75 million deal. With Chaisson potentially leaving, Phillips could be a worthy investment for the Patriots. However, plenty of teams could be targeting him.
Knox listed the Cincinnati Bengals as another suitor for Phillips. Despite not having the best season of his career, Phillips should generate interest on the open market, but may not sign as soon as some other high-profile names.
