Rumor: Red Sox Acquire Caleb Durbin From Brewers

The Boston Red Sox have their infielder. According to Jeff Passan, the Red Sox are acquiring third baseman Caleb Durbin from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for Kyle Harrison, David Hamilton and Shane Drohan. The Red Sox are also reportedly receiving infielders Andruw Monasterio and Anthony Seigler as well as a Competitive Balance Round B draft pick.

Durbin is the big prize in the deal for Boston. The 25-year-old finished third in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2025 after slashing .256/.334/.387 over 136 games last season. He also hit 11 home runs and stole 18 bases.

Standing at just 5-foot-7, Durbin’s contact quality stats as a hitter are questionable, but he makes up for it with his bat-to-ball skills. His hard hit rate and average exit velocity rank in the fourth percentile, but his whiff and strikeout ranks were both near the top of the league. He also makes the most of his contact by pulling the ball in the air frequently, which should pay dividends as a right-handed hitter at Fenway Park.

Defensively, Durbin plays primarily third base, but played some second base and shortstop as well. He grades out as about average by both outs above average and defensive runs saved. His arm strength is below average, and some minor league scouting reports felt he may shift to second base.

Monasterio will be another right-handed depth option for the Red Sox. He plays all over the infield and has hit .250 over 219 career major league games, spanning three seasons. Seigler was tabbed as a prospect to watch in the Yankees organization for his ability to both switch hit and switch pitch, but he hasn’t been able to break through in recent years.

The Red Sox had to tap into their pitching depth to complete the deal. Both Kyle Harrison and Shane Drohan were likely on the outside of the rotation looking in, but likely would have provided innings for the team at some point this season. David Hamilton also returns to the organization that drafted him back in 2019.

Pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training on Tuesday. The Red Sox might not be done yet with room to add in the bullpen, but the roster picture is beginning to look clearer.
