4K FAQ

Q: What is 4K HDR?

A: 4K HDR displays reveal an enriched, detailed viewing experience including more vibrant colors and clearer imagery. 4K resolution, as defined by TV manufacturers is 3840×2160 pixels or 2160p. For comparison, the quality of 4K displays is approximately four times what is experienced on a current HD display (1080p).

HDR, or high dynamic range, increases the clarity of the lightest and darkest parts of the TV image. This makes the whites strikingly white and the blacks even darker, rather than appearing as a shade of gray.

Q: What do I need to be able to watch the games in 4K HDR?

A: For our NESN 360 beta testing 4K HDR experience only, Apple TV and iOS will be the first devices supported.

Apple TV – For Apple TV users, you must have a compatible 4K Apple TV, a 4K TV, a 4K-compatible HDMI cable (plugged into the right 4K port on your TV), and plenty of internet speed (recommended speed is 30 mbps or more).

iOS – For iOS users, an iPhone 7 or later model as well as many iPad devices (iPad 6th generation or later, iPad Air 3rd generation or later, iPad mini 5th generation or later, and iPad Pro 2nd generation or later) will be able to play 4K HDR content.

Q: Why do I have a third live game card on the NESN 360 app? / Why are there two Red Sox games on the NESN 360 app?

A: The third live game card offers a 4K HDR feed for NESN Red Sox home games. As a NESN 360 subscriber, you have been invited to test our 4K HDR feed.

Should you run into issues or if you don’t believe your TV set up supports 4K, feel free to watch in HD using the other live NESN card.

Q: Help! My 4K HDR feed is not working properly!

A: We’re sorry to hear you’re experiencing technical difficulties. Please note that we are still testing this experience to ensure everything is seamless, but we wanted to invite fans like you to try it early and share your feedback. If you run into issues, switch to the other NESN live card on the app to go back to the HD feed and continue watching the game. Please also share feedback about your experience so we can improve it. You can use the form below to share your thoughts with us.

Q: When will the experience be perfected and live for all Red Sox home games on the NESN 360 app?

A: We will make an announcement when 4K HDR games are available on NESN 360. It may also require you to update the app, so make sure to check you have the latest version.

For the 2022 MLB regular season, only NESN’s live home game coverage of the Red Sox will be available in 4K HDR.

Q: Will watching the game in 4K HDR use up more data on my phone/internet?

A: Streaming in 4K HDR will use more data than streaming in HD. While the NESN 4K HDR stream is encoded more efficiently and has the potential to use less bandwidth to deliver the same picture quality, there always is a chance more bandwidth will be used. Please be sure to check your data and internet service provider plans to see if streaming in 4K HDR can be supported based on your streaming needs.
