Red Sox Rumors: Boston Attends Veteran Pitcher’s ‘Showcase’

The Red Sox needed some starting pitching help around the time of the trade deadline, so they went out in traded for veteran left-hander James Paxton.

Could it still add a similar type of pitcher now that the deadline has passed?

The Red Sox attended Rich Hill's pitching showcase Friday, according to Rob Bradford of Audacy.

Hill is attempting a fairly unique comeback, as he intentionally didn't sign with anyone this past offseason so he could spend more time with his family. He always wanted to pitch, however, with the idea being that he could choose to sign with a club in playoff contention and pace himself to stay sharp down the stretch if he didn't sign until August.

"I feel 100%," Hill told Bradford, per the "Baseball Isn't Boring" podcast.

Hill, who has spent three different stints in Boston, most recently pitched with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2023, making 22 starts with a 4.76 ERA. He got flipped to the San Diego Padres at the deadline but saw his production dip considerably as he recorded an 8.23 ERA in 10 appearances.

The Red Sox could use an extra arm, especially with workload becoming an issue for the likes of Kutter Crawford, Tanner Houck and Nick Pivetta. Could Boston truly be interested in a fourth go-around with Hill, though?

It remains to be seen.
