It’s getting really hard to convince New England Patriots fans that the timing isn’t right for Drake Maye to start.

We aren’t going to stop trying, though.

The Patriots suffered another infuriating loss Sunday to the Miami Dolphins, with offensive woes continuing to surface as their heaviest investment in a couple decades stood around and watched on the sidelines. Jacoby Brissett was not good enough. Alex Van Pelt continued to bundle just about everything he could. Jerod Mayo made mistakes of his own situationally.

It’s not fun watching this team, we understand that, but it also wouldn’t be fun watching Maye get buried in his first start, would it?

The Patriots offensive line is allowing the highest pressure rate in the NFL this season at 48.3%, as pointed out by CLNS’ Mike Kadlick, while the Houston Texans are generating a league-best pressure rate of 42%.

Who does New England play in Week 6?

Texans edge Danielle Hunter leads the league with 29 pressures, while his cohort Will Anderson is one of the most explosive pass-rushers in the entire NFL. Houston has a top-five passing defense and is getting after the quarterback better than most teams in the AFC. Is that the team you want to start Maye against?

The Patriots aren’t going to win many games no matter who is under center, so that isn’t much of a reason to trot Maye out there. New England should continue to wait, with a Week 11 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams looking like a more optimal time to see what the kid has to offer. Mayo is considering a move, but the time isn’t now.
